Types of Animal Cafes in Tokyo Seven kinds, and how to choose
Published 9 October 2026 / Meerkat Cafe googoo, Kichijoji, Tokyo
Tokyo's animal cafes divide less by which animal and more by how you spend your time: touching or just watching, a group or one animal, booked or walk-in. If that doesn't match what you expect, the visit can feel different from what you imagined. This page doesn't name other cafes or quote their prices or hours — we can only check our own.
Seven kinds
- Cats — the most common. Some let you touch, some are for watching.
- Dogs — animals you can call over. Some cafes let you bring your own dog.
- Small animals (rabbits, hedgehogs, chinchillas and so on) — some let you hold them, others are for watching.
- Birds — they perch on your shoulder or hand. They can be loud, so check first if that bothers you.
- Reptiles — few places let you touch; mostly for watching and learning.
- Unusual animals (such as meerkats) — few animals, and usually booking only.
- Indoor sections of petting farms — many kinds of animal in one place.
Don't think in “average prices”
Prices vary a lot with the kind and number of animals, so there is no real Tokyo average. Check three things instead: whether you pay by time or a flat entry, whether drinks are extra (many cafes ask for one drink order), and whether photos, snacks or extras cost more. For reference, googoo is 1,650 yen per person for 30 minutes, plus one drink from 550 yen (both tax included).
Do you need to book?
The fewer the animals, the more likely booking is required. Cafes with many animals, like cat cafes, often take walk-ins; cafes with unusual animals may take one group at a time. Rainy days, weekends and holidays are busy everywhere.
Where googoo fits
googoo is in the “unusual animals” group: a cafe dedicated to meerkats, one minute from the Park Exit (South Exit) of Kichijoji Station, open 11:00–19:00. Booking is not required, but when it is busy you may have to wait. Before choosing any cafe, see five things to check online.
